Collection: Diana Hardie
Diana Hardie was born Hilda Spear, during an air raid on the East End of London in the last year of the First World War.
When she was eleven, her family emigrated to Australia but five years later they were repatriated as ‘unwanted aliens.’
At 16, Hilda changed her name to Diana, and due to her parents’ poor mental health, became the family bread winner. She found a job working for a magazine in Fleet Street, not knowing that London was about to face the appalling destruction of the London Blitz.
Visiting Australia after the war, Diana met and married David Hardie. They settled in England where they enjoyed 50 years together and raised a son and daughter.
Diana wrote short stories for many popular magazines as well books, radio plays, and a drama which was produced for television by the BBC.
Diana died in 2013.
